Why book a professional photo session with your dog?

They are not just pets, they are family.

We all understand exactly why we are taking photos when it comes to the birth of a child, a high school graduation, a wedding, and even the gender reveal of an expected baby. It is imperative that we photographically document such important occasions and meaningful life events so that we have a keepsake of these incredible pieces of time. Family and friends decorate our living rooms, dining rooms and hallways.

But what about our dogs? Yes you heard me.. what about our dogs. You know… that sweet furry little creature who lives with you, sleeps in your bed… the one whom you share sometimes more than a decade of your life with. Not to mention.. the only being in your household who catapults themselves directly at you, to celebrate with every muscle and bone in their furry or fluffy body, that you have simply returned home from work… or just walked out of the bathroom. Do we know ANYONE else in our life who expresses their love for us in this way? Without condition, without question… and with unrelenting forgiveness for our faults. We love them so much in return, for their unbridled joy and the unquestioning trust they have in us. They are family. So where are the portraits of our canine family members?

Remember the moment you first met your pup… Maybe you brought home a brand new, wiggly puppy. Mouth full of tiny sharp teeth and that signature “puppy breath”. She has a seemingly endless enthusiasm for life… for every new experience the world brings, and for you. Maybe you adopted your dog from an animal rescue group. Your eyes finding his. You didn’t know it right away but he was waiting for you all along. He was scared, or perhaps up on two feet ready to jump into your car and start his new life. Maybe you were his very first opportunity for a new home. Maybe you were his 3rd, 4th or 5th home. Whether you were your dog’s first chance …or his last, there is no doubt that you two were meant to be together.

You form a bond with each other that makes you forget that the two of you are not the same species. She is playful and silly when you need a good laugh. She rests quietly near you as you read a book, or watch your tv shows at the end of every day. Reaching over and feeling that fuzzy warm head on your lap… so comfortable in your routine that you don’t recall precisely when she crawled up next to you… Some how she was just there. You are simultaneously conscious and unconscious of her presence, as if she’s an extension of yourself. The comfort and joy this creature brings to you without a world spoken between one another, is immeasurable.

Your time together is far from perfect. He’s torn up your curtains, eaten your television remote, embarrassed you in public with relentless barking… You have come home on more than one occasion to your kitchen floor decorated with the contents of your trash. You are frustrated as she sits there in the wake of the balled up tissues, ketchup stained paper plates and used styrofoam container.. (licked clean of the leftovers from the night before), with her tail thumping hard on the floor. And you don’t know whether to laugh, or cry as you clean up the debris that “Hurricane Fido” left you. As frustrating as these situations always are… somehow you still find yourself laughing with coworkers the following day, while you retell the story of this madness.

Hundreds of walks, happy tail wags and slobbery kisses later, you notice his soft muzzle beginning to gray. Although the enthusiasm for you, and light in his eyes remains the same, you take note of how much slower he is rising to greet you at the door. These days naps are a little longer and vet bills are a little higher. Despite the betrayal of his aging body, this “good boy” (or girl…) will never miss an opportunity to thump that tail to make sure you know how much he loves you. No matter how difficult or painful it can be for her to rise from that beaten up, fluffy dog bed. She will never miss an opportunity to pull herself up to greet you when you walk through the door, just to show you how happy she is that you are here…

You are becoming acutely aware how criminally short and limited your time together is, and that one day you’ll walk through your door.. and your eyes will automatically shift to an empty dog bed.

In the chaos that is life, we often forget to stop and appreciate these little moments the way that our dogs do. A photograph can do this for us. A photograph can steal these moments right here and right now. We cannot keep our best friend forever, but we can create something tangible that allows us to experience that feeling forever. Looking at a photograph allows you to not only recall a memory, but the feeling of love attached to that memory. This is why a professional photo session with your dog is so important. Capture these moments now, so you can in some small way keep them forever.

"From time to time people tell me, 'Lighten up, it's just a dog,'...They don't understand the distance traveled, or time spent...for 'Just a Dog.' Some of my proudest moments have come about with 'Just a Dog.' Many hours have passed with my only company being 'Just a Dog,' and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by 'Just a Dog.' In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of 'Just a Dog' provided me with comfort and purpose to overcome the day... I hope that someday people can understand it's not 'Just a Dog." It's the thing that gives me humanity, and keeps me from being 'Just a Man, or Just a Woman.' "
